Text Box: The Unending Battle

O.K., O.K. I don’t want to hear any of this “it’s only happening in other places,” stuff. And for those who don’t think it will ever affect you, you had better rethink things just a bit.
Some time ago I had to take a “Mutual Respect” course that my company required of each employee. At first, the material didn’t seem so bad. After all, companies have a responsibility to ensure a non-threatening environment for their workers. After reading the information, however, I found myself weighing my convictions as a Christian and wondering what I should do in light of the newly accepted category added to the list; namely, homosexuality.
The mandatory “Mutual Training” program included the following categories of people about which nothing could be said. In fact, we were to “Never use the following topics as a basis for jokes, remarks, behavior, or employment decisions: such remarks or behavior are not only disrespectful but can result in disciplinary action, up to and including discharge.”
race, color, national origin, or religion
age
gender or sexual orientation
Disability or veteran status
Do you see how it happens now? No matter where you go you’ll find the issue starring you in the face. It surfaced at my daughter’s high school as she reminded me just a few days ago; and almost without exception homosexuality is defended as a normal and “right” expression of sexuality.
Even Oprah Winfrey has chimed in on the debate with the view that “there’s nothing wrong with being gay.” It surfaces in legislation, the judicial system, our churches and, as noted above, in the policy of many companies. These issues affect us at every level and the pressure will only grow.
Well, I did what I had to do. For the record and in writing, I informed my employers, through the proper channels of course, that I was in full agreement with the non-harassment intent of the course but I could not accept the lifestyle as anything but sinful.
There are several things troubling about such a policy. First, I am convinced that the modern gay movement is just another tool designed to suppress the Gospel of Jesus Christ and its influence in the market place (i.e. work, politics, public education, etc.), and the required “mutual respect” course that I took is just one example of that effort.
Notice the above wording. In no uncertain terms, it prohibits the mention of homosexuality in any derogatory; (i.e. offensive), manner and that is nothing more than a prohibition against calling the lifestyle sin.
Here is the problem. Not only is sin nature central to the Gospel message with homosexuality being one very serious outworking of that nature, but without it there is no gospel at all. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I really don’t see how anything can be called sin without offense being part of the equation.
Second, the modern view of sexuality is deeply rooted in an evolutionary view of reality; meaning that, everything has a purely natural cause, even ones sexual preference. In more popular terms, “the homosexual is born the way he is.” This view of sexuality also reveals that you, personally, are an atheist or one of the more popular agnostics. It means that either you don’t believe that God is there at all (an atheist) or you believe that he may be out there somewhere but there’s no way we can be sure who he is or what he’s like.
Here’s how each position affects the way you view homosexuality and those who justify the lifestyle will be found in one of the two – even if you call yourself a Christian. If God isn’t there (atheist) then there is no divine mandate for the sexes. Homosexuality is no more wrong than heterosexuality because there is no ultimate lawgiver (God).
If you take the more popular view; namely, that God does exist but you just aren’t sure who he is or what he is like, then neither can you be sure that what the Bible says about sexuality is absolutely true. In essence, God hasn’t communicated to us in any absolute terms in these matters and there’s just no way to know, absolutely, what is right.
I’m sure that the “Mutual Respect” course I took won’t be my last encounter with the new morality of our age. While I cannot sacrifice truth on the alter of political correctness, I can in obedience to Christ treat every person with grace and respect; and the greatest expression of both is the truth about sin and the sin bearer.
“And God created man in his own image…male and female created he them. (Genesis 1:27) End of story.
