Text Box: What's good for the Goose… (is good for the gander)

"They were born that way!" I know you've heard this argument, as have I, in defense of the homosexual lifestyle. In fact, this sentiment exists at almost every level of society these days and the way things are going, the push for its acceptance will continue.
I normally argue against such absurdities and the foundational assumptions behind them; but this time a brilliant idea hit me. And since brilliant ideas don't hit me very often, I heeded the rare occurrence immediately. So, instead of crying over the moral "spilt milk" in our culture, I decided to adopt, at least for the purpose of this column, the same assumptions used by those who defend the homosexual lifestyle. Why not, even as a Christian, ignore the voice of reason and accept an atheistic evolutionary view of the world like our society, generally speaking, has done?
No, I haven't lost my mind; and yes, I have considered the consequences of surrendering free "choice" on the altars of evolutionary ideas. You see, if evolution is really true like your high school biology teacher says it is, then people, as the renowned atheist Richard Dawkins asserts, only "dance to their DNA." With this view, good and evil are reduced to mere human inventions that can change with the tide of public opinion. But hey, we Christians won't let those little bumps in the philosophical road bother us if you don't.
When all is said and done, there may be great benefits in accepting a purely naturalistic universe and exterminating the old-fashioned ideas of God, human accountability and free choice. So, let's see where some sort of consistency might carry us.
First, let's consider our children. The universal acceptance and consistent outworking of evolutionary ideas could benefit children everywhere who are normally punished for simply being normal. Children should be able to dance to their DNA without parental interference. It doesn't matter, if the least bit of consistency is maintained, that their actions contradict parental wishes or go against the grain of public opinion. In a nutshell, children should never be disciplined for behaving the way they were born to behave.
Wow! I would have traded my sister for a defense like this one. Of course, I probably would have traded her for just about anything, but the point is this, where were evolutionary ideas and deterministic thinking when I really needed them? Does anybody know the statute of limitations on this one?
Second, by consistently believing that behavior is determined by the way one is born, the disdain for religious thinking that plagues our world today could also be eliminated. Religious ideas are generally considered outdated you know; but hey, if evolution is true, then our religious opinions and behavior are the result of the same natural processes that spawned homosexuality. That means that, and I'm working hard to be consistent with their assumptions here, our decision to become and think like Christians is the result of our genetic makeup as well. In more specific terms, we were born to believe the way we do and our rejection of homosexuality really isn't a choice at all. We were born to condemn the lifestyle, plain and simple.
Now, if some random mutation takes place in our brain chemistry at some point in the future and the lifestyle that we now condemn becomes viewed in a more favorable light then we'll let you know. Until then, however, we'll just continue to think as we were born to think; or perhaps more appropriately, born-again to think.
I realize that I've taken the argument to an extreme in this column; but I have only pushed it to the logical end of its own assumptions. In fact, I am asking nothing of the modern gay activists that they don't already demand of everybody else; namely, to believe that homosexuals are born the way they are at the expense of human choice. If purely natural and chemical processes really eliminate choice for homosexuals, it is fair to assume that choice is also eliminated for those who oppose the homosexual lifestyle. What's good for the goose is good for the gander, don't you think?
At this point, it should be obvious that I am not attacking the homosexual per se. My disdain isn't for those trapped by their sin, but for those who do everything in their power to keep them there by redefining who they are as human beings and tightening their bonds with an atheistic interpretation of reality.
Since this issue will plague us for years to come, a message of hope is needed like never before. For those trapped by the power of homosexuality, deliverance and transformation are possible in the saving power of Jesus Christ. (Acts 4:12)
